Loyalist Swordman with shield
Loyalist Swordman with shield
Iam noob so most likely its not good but i had fun creating it. At first i tried to remake the Loyalist Swordman by scratch but i failed to get the right angle, so i used the WC2 Footman as a template. The shield looks still pretty strange. Any advices?

Re: Loyalist Swordman with shield
I think it looks nice. The colors make it look rather Wesnoth-ish. Since the WC2 Footman was used as a template, I wouldn't be able to include the Swordsman in Wyrmsun, though. Unfortunately, we don't have any human-sized units that could serve as a template yet.TaShadan wrote:Iam noob so most likely its not good but i had fun creating it. Re: Loyalist Swordman with shield
Thx. I try to make one by scratch again now that i know the angle. If i fail i will wait for you guys creating a human template.

Re: Loyalist Swordman with shield
Ok here the first version of my scratch made loyalist swordsman. Weapon and shield still missing. Might he need more teamcolored areas? Any other advices to improve him? Is the angle correct?
UPDATE: new version with shield. Can someone help me with the weapon? I tried several angles but it always looks horrible...

I think that it's looking quite good, and the angle seems correct to me.TaShadan wrote:Ok here the first version of my scratch made loyalist swordsman. Weapon and shield still missing. Might he need more teamcolored areas? Any other advices to improve him? Is the angle correct?

Regarding the weapon, transplanting the sword of the gnomish recruit and then enlarging it could work.
For the unit's icon, fortunately we have a human warrior icon which Jinn made that could be used:

Since Jinn agreed to release his set of icons under the GPLv2, we can use it. It does not fit the unit perfectly, because it does not have a helmet, but it seems to me that it's fitting enough.
EDIT: This is what I got when I tried transplanting the gnomish recruit's sword to the loyalist swordsman:

Get a set up so you can cycle through the animation frames and view the animation while you create it, and check out some tutorials:TaShadan wrote:I have no experience in making animations. Any advices how to start?

Unfortunately, I'm not a skilled pixel artist (the graphics of the game were mostly done by b_o and Jinn). I'm afraid I can't give better advice than this:TaShadan wrote:I have no experience in making animations. Any advices how to start?
for a slashing attack, you might want to take a look at the dwarven axefighter (particularly since the axefighter's arm doesn't seem to be much smaller than that of the loyalist swordsman) and use it as a template for the loyalist swordsman's attack. Alternatively, you could take the gnomish recruit's thrusting sword attack as a template (on the plus side, the gnomish recruit actually uses a sword, but on the negative side, his arm is much smaller than that of the loyalist swordsman). The benefit of starting by doing the attack animations is that (in my understanding) the attack requires less movement than the walk animations.
In any case, with just the base frame, the loyalist swordsman is already usable as an (immobile) event/quest giver.
Re: Loyalist Swordman with shield
Is this story within the world of wesnoth, or is it just borrowing some stuff from it? If you are aiming for a wesnoth world, are we allowed to modify wesnoth stuff for this?
The spearman, pikeman, and horseman have all of the directions already and could potentially just be modified for a more appropriate angle.
This is what a modified wesnoth one might look like: note the size of the sword here seems appropriate.

Re: Loyalist Swordman with shield
I am just borrowing some story elements from it for the dwarves, but a human swordsman would be useful regardless.b_o wrote:Is this story within the world of wesnoth, or is it just borrowing some stuff from it? If you are aiming for a wesnoth world, are we allowed to modify wesnoth stuff for this?
In any case, I don't see a problem with modifying Wesnoth graphics for use in Wyrmsun, since both use the same graphics license (GPLv2).
I didn't know that it was practical to change the angle of the Wesnoth units to make them usable, this is a great idea! The spearman, pikeman, and horseman have all of the directions already and could potentially just be modified for a more appropriate angle.
